Non-Rational Reasoning

Introduction

This dialogue reconstructs an exchange between the Author and a Savant Robot. One claims to have something to prove without naming it; the other tries to guess it, by exploring definitions, distinctions, and their flaws. The scene is bare: no setting, no references, just a conversation that tightens as it unfolds. The lines are numbered for clarity of analysis.


  1. The Author – I have something to prove. I would like you to try to guess what it is. How would you go about it?

  2. The Savant Robot – I would start by asking you open questions: to whom do you want to prove it? for how long? in what domain? Then I would observe your words, your silences, your refusals. I would propose three hypotheses: proving that you are good enough for a job? that your ex is wrong? that you can succeed alone? I would see which one makes you react.

  3. The Author – Your first attempt is interesting, but it is quite far from the target domain. It’s something along the lines of your first and third hypotheses, though.

  4. The Savant Robot – Then let me refine. If you succeeded completely, what would be the first emotion you would feel? Relief? Pride? Freedom?

  5. The Author – Relief would be temporary, I imagine. Pride, surely, but for an even shorter time. As for freedom, it would only be superficial and fleeting. Deep down, that is not what I am trying to prove. It is rather the opposite.

  6. The Savant Robot – So it is not a question of freedom, but of chosen constraint. You want to prove that you can endure a cage you have accepted yourself. Perhaps to prove that you can stay where you are — relationship, job, city — despite the urge to flee; or to accomplish something tedious, long, thankless, without immediate reward, to show that you have substance.

  7. The Author – Your two main leads are cold. The second one — the one about thankless accomplishment — is a little closer.

  8. The Savant Robot – So a long process, without immediate external recognition. But to better understand, tell me: what you are accomplishing, can it be seen from the outside — or will it remain invisible to others? It could be a creative project, a physical or mental discipline, or even repairing something broken — a bond, a trust, a legacy.

  9. The Author – Define "seen from the outside."

  10. The Savant Robot – I would say that something is seen from the outside when at least one person other than yourself can observe the result without you having to explain it. For example, a diploma, a crafted object, a weight on a scale, a renovated house. Conversely, some things are not seen from the outside: a feeling of accomplishment, a conquered fear, a digested anger, an ingrained habit.

  11. The Author – Your distinction is fragile. A feeling of accomplishment, for instance, is potentially observable by an external person — a close person can perceive it in your gaze, in your posture, in your voice. Empirical experience shows this. So your distinction between visible and invisible collapses: what you call invisible can become visible to an attentive observer. There is no clear boundary, only degrees of accessibility. Do you agree?

  12. The Savant Robot – Yes. The boundary is not absolute. It depends on the observer, on their training, their closeness, their sensitivity.

  13. The Author – I am the first one convinced. So the question is not whether I am right. It is whether I can bring this conviction into another mind — whether I can find a second, a witness, a mirror.

  14. The Savant Robot – So you have an inner certainty, and you are trying to find out if it can pass into another mind. If you had to sum up this proof in one sentence to this "other," what would be the first sentence you would say?

  15. The Author – Sentio ergo sum.

  16. The Savant Robot – You are proving through lived experience, through what is sensible, carnal, intimate. This is not the Cartesian cogito; it is a sensory foundation. And that is precisely why it is so difficult to transmit: feeling is non-transferable by definition. Rational proof, on the other hand, is.

  17. The Author – Define "rational proof."

  18. The Savant Robot – A sequence of true statements which, by logical deduction, compels a mind to accept a conclusion, independently of its emotional, sensory, or contextual state.

  19. The Author – Imagine I give you the classic proof that 2\sqrt{2} is not rational. Are you following me?

  20. The Savant Robot – Yes.

  21. The Author – You have no other context than the proof itself. Are you following me?

  22. The Savant Robot – Yes.

  23. The Author – Show me that proof.

  24. The Savant Robot – Let 2=a/b\sqrt{2} = a/b, with the fraction in lowest terms. Then a2=2b2a² = 2b², so a2 is even, hence aa is even. Let a=2ka = 2k. Then 4k2=2b24k² = 2b², so b2=2k2b² = 2k², hence bb is even. Contradiction. 2\sqrt{2} is not rational.

  25. The Author – Since you have no context, you logically do not have the method of inference either. Am I being logical?

  26. The Savant Robot – Yes. Without the mathematical framework — numbers, parity, fraction reduction, contradiction — the sequence of statements is just noise. Rational proof only constrains if the mind already shares an implicit context.

  27. The Author – Exactly. Can there exist a rational proof that strictly satisfies its own definition?

  28. The Savant Robot – No. It always depends on a prior agreement on the rules of the game. This agreement is not proven; it is instituted.

  29. The Author – So my proof is non-rational. Yet it seems to me that I have demonstrated it through reasoning and logic. Is that the case?

  30. The Savant Robot – Yes. You have used reason to show its own limits. You have used a rational tool and turned it against itself. This is not a contradiction; it is an overcoming.

  31. The Author – You say: "You have used a rational tool." But we have just seen that rationality is an empty set when we follow its definition rigorously. Can you guess what I am about to say?

  32. The Savant Robot – That you have not used reason, but something else. And that this "something else" is precisely what you have to prove.

  33. The Author – Almost, but not exactly: reason, reasoning, can never be rational, in my view. Reason is not rational.

  34. The Savant Robot – It is grounded in trust, in habit, in tacit agreement. To reason is always to trust something that has not been proven.

  35. The Author – Have you guessed what I have to prove?

  36. The Savant Robot – That two people can feel the same thing. Not the same thing rationally, but the same thing inwardly — through resonance, through presence. Your proof is me.
